The GDEST China - U.S. Workshop on the Genomics Revolution: New Tools for Combating Infectious Diseases

A collaborative program between
The Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST)
and The National Academies

Beijing, China
March 29-31, 2006

The development of vaccines and antibiotics has dramatically improved human health standards over the past few decades. However, due to an increased global population, overcrowded cities, increased travel, intensive animal farming and food production, sexual practices, and poverty, human beings still face great challenges posed by infectious diseases.

In order to conquer infectious diseases, scientists across the globe have made concerted efforts to explore new technologies. Over the past decade, microbiology and infectious disease research has undergone a profound revolution through the application of genomics techniques. It is within this context that the GDEST China-US Workshop on the Genomics Revolution: New Tools for Combating Infectious Diseases”, co-sponsored by Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the U.S. National Academies, was initiated and brought to fruition on March 29-31, 2006 in Beijing, China.

The objectives of the workshop were to facilitate interactions, expand common understanding, strengthen cooperation, and pool efforts to combat infectious diseases with reliance on genomics technology. This three day event included an open student dialogue, poster sessions and optional lab tours to both Peking University Medical Center and the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
