COLLABORATION IN BASIC SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (COBASE)
Anatoly Erlykin of Russia visited Todor Stanev at the Bartol Research Institute for two weeks in August 1999. During the visit, Erlykin met with Stanev and his colleague, T.K. Gaisser, to discuss scientific problems concerning the spectrum and composition of high-energy galactic cosmic rays. The three scientists involved also shared their recent work in this field including preliminary results from the new South Pole Air Shower Experiment (SPASE-2). Stanev reported that a planned NSF proposal was in the final stages of preparation and would be submitted in the first half of November 1999. This future work will involve data analysis and interpretation of data collected with the SPASE-2 array and specifically the dependence of the interpretation of the experimental results in terms of chemical composition on the hadronic interaction models used in the analysis. On his journey home, Erlykin made a stop in Salt Lake City, Utah to participate in the International Cosmic Ray Conference thanks to financial support from the local organizing committee of the conference. He left from Utah to return to Russia on August 27, 1999.
