COLLABORATION IN BASIC SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (COBASE)

Yevgeny Gayev of the Institute of Hydromechanics in Kiev spent February and March 2001 visiting Robert Meroney of Colorado State University’s Fluid Mechanics and Wind Engineering Program. During the visit, the two colleagues discussed their mutual interests in the interaction of deep turbulent shear flows with surface roughness features. This interaction affects the mixing of air masses in such places as forests, agricultural canopies, and urban areas. These same mechanisms also operate where fluids interact with vegetation and bottom surface features in rivers and canals, thus helping to determine flow rates, sediment transport, and pollution dispersion.

In addition to familiarizing himself with the instruments and facilities available at Colorado State, Gayev presented three seminars at the university on the topic of penetrative convection and its applications. He also made invited presentations at the University of California - Davis and Cermak, Peterka, and Petersen Inc., a private consulting firm in Fort Collins. Through all these activities, Gayev made personal contacts that will be valuable in developing future collaborative research projects. He also collected copies of a number of publications that were unavailable in Ukraine, and he plans to incorporate the newly-obtained information into his own research.

Gayev, Meroney, and other colleagues prepared a draft preproposal entitled "Compromising Individually-Featured and Homogeneity-Modeled Approaches to Understanding Flows Associated with Natural and/or Artificial Canopies." Pending modifications, the proposal will be submitted to the appropriate funders in the United States and Ukraine.
