Committee on Polar Research, 1961-1966
Established in early 1958, the extradivisional Committee on Polar Research grew out of the Academy's US National Committee on the International Geophysical Year. Following up on the USNC's direction of IGY scientific activities at the North and South Poles, the Committee developed program recommendations for the National Science Foundation regarding scientific research in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The Committee also served as the US National Committee for the International Council of Scientific Union's Special (later, Scientific) Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR). In 1975, the Committee was reorganized as the Polar Research Board under the National Research Council's Assembly of Mathematical and Physical Sciences.
The records of the Committee on Polar Research span 8 linear feet and contain correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, and reports. The records have been arranged according to the NAS Records System, the structure of which follows the organization of the institution at the time the records were created. The collection is divided into two groups, one containing activity records, and the second containing reports.
