Shown here is a cosmic ray ionization chamber for measuring variations in cosmic ray intensity. At the time this picture was taken, in September 1957, there were six such instruments operating in various parts of the world. This ionization chamber was operated at the US Coast and Geodetic Survey's Fredericksburg Magnetic Observatory.
