Member of the Antarctic trail party preparing to investigate a crevasse in Marie Byrd Land. Crevasses such as these were explored, dynamited, and filled in by trail parties to ensure the safe passage of traverse parties. Crevasse investigations provided valuable scientific information on ice formation and movement.
